I struggled with finding a design that worked for a special set I'm doing for a friend. I think this is it. I'm sharing this because I really want to credit the design to @lekka_____ who is a wonderful artist (check 'em out). I don't like directly copying someone's style, but credit due, this is exactly one of the elements that was needed for these pieces.

Showing off the newly made blue glaze. By itself a deep blue, with almost a black undertone - but the glaze interactions are so fun! It's so easy to achieve different levels of blues, purples, and add even a little flare to one of my brown glazes.

Part 3: (the worst part, because its the messiest for me) - sieveing the glaze. Luckily thr next part is the most fun, which is firing the new glaze!

Overall, making glaze is definitely a process. I wanted to share the details of this because it's important to see some of these other tasks that happen in the background beyond throwing pots on the wheel.

There are benefits and drawbacks to any source of acquiring glaze. The biggest pro for me is making larger volumes at a much cheaper cost. This ~5 gal bucket of glaze cost about $40 in materials, but there's also the hours of time to make it. On the other hand, I might spend $22 on a single pint of a commercial glaze, and click a few buttons to have it shipped. Both have their place and necessity in my work.

Last thought, I'm open to any tips on the process to make cleanup easier 😅 or tips in general from you other glaze makers.

Part 2: Adding the dry components to water. In this part its really about getting as much of the dry material into the mix as possible.

I always start with less water that way I can use additional water to rinse the dry mix bucket and bowl and get it all in there. When you have about 10000g of material, some of those, like the cobalt, is just 217g, a few grams here and there of small (and mighty) components can really change the glaze in small ways.

The lid goes on top of the bucket while the materials soak into the water so as to minimize particles escaping (this is why I continue to wear the respirator). I find that waiting a bit to mix everything makes it much easier to get through the sieve.

Part 1 of 3: following a recipe to make 5 gallons of glaze.

I use a mix of pre-mixed commercial glazes from Amaco and Mayco, preformulated dry mixes which simply get mixed with water, and some glazes that are measured and mixed by following a recipe, which is what I'm doing here.

This is not a nitty gritty video, but shows the overarching process. I can answer questions if you've got em, or direct you to some different resources, just pop into the comments or dms and ask away. I can at least answer this one: yes, the stink bug situation was super gross.

This is me every year when the flowers bloom and the inevitable frost or winter something comes to kill them. But, I saved a few and arranged them in some flower frog mason jar toppers. One made by @imc_clay, the other by myself. They really are pretty awesome for smaller arrangements, unlike the freezing rain and snow currently messing about outside.

The good news is that this actually doesn't kill the plant. Daffodil bulbs are very cold hardy, but the ice will kills the blooms. I'm picking a few to enjoy, but leaving most, especially unopened buds which may still bloom. Never cut back the foliage, because that will definitely hurt the plant.

I wanted to call myself a muggler, aka "mug smuggler", but its so close to muggle, which I suppose is accurate as I am also one of those. Also a potter, though unrelated.

Also, I always had this idea of a coffee spot where people can buy a custom mug, and the mug would include some sort of amount of free coffees with purchase, but the mug would also live at the Cafe, and someone could come in and say "I'm mug #17" and you'd pull that mug down and give them a brew in their special piece. Or something like that.

Disclosure statement: coffee was paid for and filled in the paper cup for proper measurement of coffee based on size purchased. I am a coffee rule follower and enjoyer of our great local businesses ❤️
